What are Extreme Risk Protection Orders(ERPO) or “Red Flag Laws?”

Red Flag Laws or ERPOs allow family members, household members or law enforcement officials to petition a state court to temporarily remove firearms from individuals who may present a danger to themselves or others.

If someone you know sees or knows that you own firearms and feels that you could be a danger to yourself or others, they can notify law enforcement. Law enforcement can then petition a judge to allow them to remove your firearms from your possession.

This petition is made without your knowledge. So, before you have a chance to defend yourself against these allegations, a court has already decided to temporarily restrict your access to your firearms. You’re considered guilty and then must prove your innocence to have your firearms returned to you and your rights restored.

Thankfully, Georgia does not have any Red Flag Laws, but we cannot grow complacent. Our neighbors to the south, Florida, do have Red Flag Laws.

A few weeks ago, The Department of Justice introduced the launch of the National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center. Mrgunsngear made a great video detailing the dangers to the 2A community with this resource center. Give it a watch!

Governors Gun Club Drill of the Month (#GGCDOTM)

Our first Drill of the Month will be the Failure to Stop also known as the Mozambique Drill. The drill gets its history and name after a Rhodesian mercenary engaged a target from 7 meters, firing 2 rounds to center mass. After seeing that the target was still advancing, he attempted a head shot, hitting the target's neck, severing the spinal cord and killing him. The theory of this drill is that our center mass shots are not stopping the threat, whether the target is wearing body armor, under the influence of drugs, or our shots are missing vital organs. The follow-up headshot is the one that counts to immediately incapacitate our threat.

The Drill:

At 7 yards on any silhouette target, fire 2 rounds to center mass and 1 follow up round to the head. The follow up headshot must land within the "T-Box" zone for it to count.

What skills does this drill reinforce?

  • Cadence (Pacing)
  • Shot Placement
This drill is meant to reinforce the pacing or cadence of our shots. The 2 center mass shots should have a faster cadence, while the follow up head shot should be slow and deliberate. Since the follow-up shot is the only one that counts, a more precise, slower and well-placed shot needs to be taken after our 2 faster rounds.

Perfecting this drill:

Since out center mass shots are not stopping the threat, we need a well-placed and precisely aimed headshot. You first 2 center mass shots will be quicker; the follow up headshot requires more precision than your first 2 shots. Apply those good shooting fundamentals on the headshot, because that's the only one that's going to count!

With a sharpie or pen, draw a “T Box” on the head of the target where the eyes and nose would be. Some targets already have this “T box” zone on them. This T Box zone should be where our head shot rounds should land. For a headshot to be the most effective, it must pass through this T Box zone, as rounds passing through this zone will have a better chance of penetration of the human skull, resulting in immediate incapacitation.

You can also perfect this drill by having our target carrier "run" towards us. In our target carrier system, it's listed underneath Programs -> Charging drill. This will take the target back and run it towards you all automatically. This way, you can get a gauge of what it's like for a target to "fail to stop."

Post your drills and tag us! #GGCDOTM

I would love to see all of the shooters and followers of our blog post pictures or videos of themselves doing these drills on the range! If you post your videos/pictures to any social media, be sure to tag us and use #GGCDOTM so we can find your videos!

Tips & Tricks

Accuracy

Shots not landing where you want them to? The biggest killer of accuracy is poor trigger control and anticipation of the recoil. Slow down your press of the trigger, and you’ll notice there are 3 “stages” to your trigger. We call those 3 stages the takeup, the wall, and the break. The key to accurate shot placement is slowly progressing through each of those stages during your trigger press. Dry fire this for several repetitions, focusing on going slow through each of the stages of the trigger press. When the trigger “breaks,” there should be very little or no excess movement of the firearm. This conditions your body and mind to understand HOW to press the trigger. When on the range continue to pull the trigger this same way.

Gear & Gadgets Highlight

Maglula Speed Loader

Do you have a difficult-to-load magazine? Have tons of rounds to load? Disabilities in the hands? This little gadget is a GOD SEND for loading magazines. There are others out there that do the same thing, but this one is the easiest to pick up and understand how to use. It's compact, light, and intuitive to use. How it works is that it has a feed ramp to press down on the follower, spring, and rounds using the leverage of your whole hand rather than just a few fingers or your thumb. Simply align the picture of the round with the direction the rounds go into the magazine, squeeze your grip to move the ramp into place, and pull down. The ramp will push down on the spring and allow you to load a single round into the magazine. Let go and repeat! They come in different colors too; black, green, pink, purple, yellow, and red white and blue! Any shooter that spends even a small amount of time at the range needs one of these in their range bag! We have these here in store for purchase!
